OUR STORY

American and Florida BioProcessing began with a pivotal meeting at the University of Louisville, where Ty Wilkinson, retired founder and then Chief Agricultural Officer, was introduced to Dr. Jagannadh Satyavolu, a brilliant chemical engineer. At the time, Ty led a timber company in South America, and Dr. Satyavolu sought a partnership to utilize wood waste for the extraction of hemicellulose. While initial tests showed challenges with the silica in the wood, this meeting set the foundation for a future collaboration.

Over the following years, Dr. Satyavolu perfected a process to extract xylose from the hemicellulose in plant cell walls. The two remained in touch, sharing a vision that would soon shape the future of sustainable bioprocessing. In 2017, as Ty ventured into the hemp industry, he noticed a common challenge among processors regarding the disposal of hemp waste. Recognizing the potential for synergy, Ty approached Dr. Satyavolu, who revealed that hemp biomass was a rich source of xylose, leading to the development of valuable byproducts like activated carbon.

From vision to reality

Inspired by this opportunity, American and Florida BioProcessing were founded in 2019, focused on transforming hemp and sugarcane waste into commercially valuable products such as xylose, activated carbon, and biocoal. Florida BioProcessing received exclusive patent rights in 2021 to utilize Dr. Satyavolu’s extraction process for sugarcane waste in Florida and for hemp waste globally.

In 2020, Jeff Rudd joined as a passive investor and soon took on the role of acting CEO in 2021, bringing his extensive experience in business development and process deployment.

Jeff's leadership has been instrumental in guiding the organization through new challenges and opportunities. His strategic vision enhances our capabilities, driving us towards sustainable growth and success in an ever-evolving market. In late 2021 the team expanded to include Hallie Visaggio as Chief Operations Officer and Richard Schwartz as Chief Revenue Officer. Both Hallie and Rich have small equity stakes in the company and bring a wealth of experience to the team.

As of October 2023, Ty Wilkinson has retired from the company's day-to-day operations, focusing more on his family and other personal commitments. Ty now serves as a technical liaison and consultant, lending his expertise to ensure the ongoing success and innovation at Florida BioProcessing.

Today, Florida BioProcessing is focused on building a manufacturing plant in Florida to repurpose biomass waste from the sugar farms and mills. FBP’s patented process will create an efficient, profitable facility for domestic xylose, activated carbon, and biocoal.
